YMCA Gives Awards at Annual Peace Breakfast

YMCA 2014 peace medallion recipients SML
(Moncton, November 21, 2014) – The Codiac Regional RCMP was among several local recipients of Peace Medallions awarded today during the YMCA of Greater Moncton’s annual Peace Breakfast.

During the event at the Delta Beauséjour Hotel, the RCMP was given the Peace Medallion for their exceptional contributions to the community following the June 4 shooting of area police officers and the related manhunt in northwest Moncton.

“During this time of tragedy and anxiety, the Codiac RCMP went far and above the normal expectations of their peacekeeping role, “ said Anne Poirier-Basque, Chair of the Board of Directors for the YMCA of Greater Moncton, in bestowing the award to the RCMP via Codiac Supt. Paul Beauchesne. “The members who gave their lives, who were injured, as well as those who worked long, challenging hours while mourning their colleagues – the entire Codiac RCMP family truly inspired us with their dedication to this community.”

Other 2014 Peace Medallion recipients included Lesley Smyth, who – as executive director and therapist with the Atlantic Wellness Community Centre – works to help youth and young adults with mental health illnesses and concerns; the West Riverview Elementary School Peace Leaders and Playground Pals, led by guidance counsellor Shelley Hallihan; and Jay Jonah, a young adult from Hopewell Cape who has been involved in projects to educate the public about transgender issues. (For full bios, see below.)

“Moncton is a city with heart, compassion and spirit,” said Moncton Mayor George LeBlanc, who was the guest speaker at today’s breakfast. “We look after each other and when we face adversity, we come back stronger. Moncton is a great place to live because of individuals and organizations such as the ones honoured today.”

The Peace Breakfast takes place annually during YMCA Peace Week and is marked by Ys around the globe as well as schools and community groups, all of whom celebrate a common interest in creating a more just and peaceful world. Funds raised by the local Y during Peace Week assist partner Ys in Columbia and Honduras.
