The Youth Tutor (YT) program

The Youth Tutor (YT) program offers free, confidential one-on-one tutoring to School District 2 elementary and middle school children, grades one to six, who wish to improve their literary skills (reading and writing).

The program has two main developmental goals: literacy competency and social/life skill development. It runs concurrent with the school calendar year, operating Monday to Thursday from October to May.

Student volunteer tutors are recruited from local-area high schools. They are trained and matched to students referred by their teachers from participating elementary and middle schools.

Elementary and middle school students commit to two one-hour sessions per week, resulting in a total of 34 weeks of tutoring support for children struggling with literacy issues. The YMCA recognizes the busy lives of families, thus the program provides the choice of two time slots: an after school session from 4:00 till 5:00 or an evening session from 5:30 till 6:30 p.m.

The program received the 2003 Canada Post Award for Community Leadership.

English Additional Language Classes at the YMCA

The YMCA of Greater Moncton in partnership with School District 2 are now offering English Additional Language Classes (EAL).

Classes are designed to improve the overall English Language Skills of all participants. Classes are geared towards adults and mature students.

EAL Classes are led by a certified English Language Instructor. Classes are held in an informal and relaxed community environment. Instruction will focus on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Participants may register at the YMCA of Greater Moncton.
