Supporting Canada's Youth at Risk PDF Print E-mail

The RCMP Foundation presented a cheque in the amount of $2,000 to the Beaverbrook School YMCA Youth Tutoring Program to provide over 30 children participating in the Beaverbrook School YMCA Youth Tutor Program with a healthy, nutritious diner throughout the school year.

Students were happy to have a healthy meal after a long day at school so that they could continue to focus on learning and participate in the tutoring program. Research tells us that hunger has a negative impact on a child's ability to learn in school. Those children who are hungry cannot concentrate or do as well as others on the tasks they need to perform to learn the basics. The results of the healthy nutrition program were that children were more focused and attentive, with organizers reporting a marked increase in attendance from previous years.

The YMCA Tutoring Program offers free, confidential one-on-one tutoring to elementary and middle school children. The program has two main developmental goals: literacy competency and social/life skills development. Students commit to two one-hour sessions per week for a total of 34 weeks. With the program being offered immediately afterschool, hunger is a barrier to participation for many.

The RCMP Foundation was created in 1994 to support community initiatives in which local RCMP members are involved. The Members volunteer their time and energy in the community to get these projects up and running.

The RCMP Foundation manages the RCMP licensing program, operates 2 retail stores in Ottawa one in Chilliwack BC in addition to an online store (www.themountieshop.ca), holds events and engages the involvement of corporate Canada in its activities. Funds raised are used to support sports teams and events, drug awareness, youth programs and self-help programs, victim services and internet safety, all for benefit of Canada's youth at risk.
