Winter 2012 Pre-School Swim Lessons

The purpose of swim classed is to build values and orientate pre-schoolers to a wide range of water activity.

Splashers (3-36 months): Splashes with hands or feet (with adult)
Bubblers: Front/back float assisted
Bobbers: Bobs assisted
Floaters: Front/Back floats
Gliders: Front/Side/Back Glides
Divers: Jumps into deep water
Surfers: Front/Back swim
Dippers: Surface support 45 seconds

How we build assets?

• Say “yes” more often than “no”
• Give opportunity for choice
• Model healthy attitudes and choices
• Balance structured time with playtime
• Sing songs to learn skills
• Praise children for demonstrating positive values
• Encourage friendships
• Respect children even when they make mistakes


Winter 2012 - Youth Swim Lessons (6 years and older)

The purpose of this class is to build values and orientate individuals 6 and over to fundamental swim skills.
Otter: Front and back floats, swim 5 metres
Seal: Deep water skills, swim 10 metres
Dolphin: Tread water; swim on front or back 25 metres
Swimmer: Swim 50 metres; front crawl - 25 metres

• Lead age appropriate activities
• Listen to the wants and needs of young people
• Encourage participation in all activities

Winter 2012 - Star Program

The purpose of this class is to develop the individual, improving swim ability, develop water sport and safety skills, as well as endurance. Also to new strokes and explore leadership skills.
Star 1: Tread water 90 seconds; Endurance swim - 75 metres
Star 2: Deep dive; Elementary backstroke - 25 metres
Star 3: Feet first sculling; Breaststroke - 25 metres
Star 4: Endurance swim -500 metres; Front crawl turn
Star 5: Eggbeater kick 2 min.; Sidestroke - 25 metres
Star 6: Water polo skills; Butterfly - 25 metres

How we build assets

• Assist individuals to set goals
• Ask young people for feedback about their swim class
• Communicate that learning is important
• Give opportunities for leadership
• Listen to young people talk about their activities, hopes and dreams
• Assist young people to treat one another with respect
• Clearly communicate expectations and boundaries
• Promote ways to deal with conflict peacefully
